The Short Answer

Stay at Volcano House, the only hotel inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, if you want to walk out to the crater rim early or late. Otherwise, Volcano Village, just outside the park entrance, has small rainforest inns and cottages such as Kilauea Lodge.

Stay in Hilo if you want more hotels and restaurants and a short drive to the airport. It is about 45 minutes from the park. Volcano is cooler and wetter than the coast, so pack layers and a rain jacket.

Visiting Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

  • Check the eruption status first. Kīlauea has been erupting in episodes within Halemaʻumaʻu crater, inside the park. Activity starts and stops, so check the National Park Service's eruption page shortly before your visit.
  • Hours and fees: the park is open 24 hours a day, every day. Entry is about $30 per vehicle, and Volcano House room rates don't include it.
  • Construction: the park warns of closures and delays from a two-year construction project in the summit area, so check its conditions page.
  • Lodging: Volcano House, with 33 rooms, is the only hotel inside the park.

Getting to Hilo and Volcano

  • Hilo International Airport (ITO) is about 2 miles from the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Banyan Drive.
  • Hilo to the park: about 45 minutes, 30 miles on Highway 11.
  • Kona to the park: 2–2.5 hours by the southern route, or 2.5–3 hours via Waimea and Hilo. In late September 2026, Hurricane Nolo caused flooding and closures in Kaʻū and Puna, including along Highway 11, so check road conditions.
  • Kona to Hilo: about 1.75–2 hours across the island. For the dry west coast, see Kona and the Kohala Coast.
