Where to Stay on Kauaʻi

Kauaʻi has three main hotel areas: sunny Poʻipū in the south, green Princeville and Hanalei on the north shore, and Kapaʻa and Līhuʻe on the east side in between. No road runs along the Nā Pali Coast, so your base decides your drive times.

The Short Answer

Stay in Poʻipū on the south shore for the sunniest weather and the easiest swimming beaches; our pick is Ko'a Kea Resort, right on Poʻipū Beach. Stay on the north shore, in Princeville or Hanalei, for mountains, Hanalei Bay and the trailhead at Kēʻē Beach, but expect more rain and big winter surf.

Stay in Kapaʻa or Līhuʻe, on the east side, for more budget choices and a central base: from there, Poʻipū and Princeville are both day trips.

Kauaʻi After Hurricane Lowell

Hurricane Lowell passed west of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau in early September 2026 as a Category 2 storm. The National Weather Service reported that large waves and storm surge swept away cars, homes and roads in the Poʻipū area, and flooding closed Kūhiō Highway near Hanalei and Wainiha. Later that month, rain from Hurricane Nolo flooded the Hanalei River bridge area and closed the highway again.

The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority says most accommodations, restaurants, shops, tours and activities are operating as usual. As of early November 2026:

  • Hāʻena State Park reopened on October 15, 2026.
  • Waimea Canyon Lookout reopened on October 24, 2026, but other lookouts are still closed, and Kōkeʻe Road is closed until further notice.
  • All state park camping on Kauaʻi is closed.

Check openkauai.org and the state parks notices before you go, and ask your hotel what is open nearby.

Getting Around Kauaʻi

  • From Līhuʻe Airport (LIH): 15–25 minutes to Kapaʻa, 25–35 minutes to Poʻipū and 45 minutes to an hour to Princeville.
  • Hāʻena State Park: visitors need a reservation for entry or parking, released 30 days ahead, and a shuttle runs from Hanalei and Princeville. Book it before you plan a north shore day; our Princeville and Hanalei guide has details.
  • No loop road: the north shore highway ends at Hāʻena and the west side road ends beyond Kekaha, so you can't drive around the island.
  • You need a car. Buses are limited, and the beaches and trailheads are spread out.
