Where to Stay on the Big Island (Hawaiʻi Island)

The Big Island is big enough that where you sleep shapes your trip. Most visitors base themselves on the dry west coast and add a night or two near Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

The Short Answer

Base yourself on the west coast, where the weather is driest and the beaches are. Pick the Kohala Coast for white-sand resort beaches (our pick is the Fairmont Orchid) or Kona for a walkable town and better value. Then spend one or two nights in Volcano Village or Hilo, so you can see Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park without a long round trip.

  • Kona to the national park takes 2–2.5 hours each way by the southern route, which makes a day trip long.
  • Hilo, on the rainy east side, has older bayfront hotels and is about 45 minutes from the park.
  • Waimea, in the cool uplands, is a budget base about 15 minutes from Hāpuna Beach.

Visiting Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

  • Eruption status changes. Kīlauea has been erupting in episodes inside Halemaʻumaʻu crater, within the park. Check the National Park Service's eruption page shortly before you go, and don't build your trip around seeing lava.
  • Entry: about $30 per vehicle. The park is open 24 hours a day, every day.
  • Construction: the park warns of closures and delays from a two-year construction project in the summit area, so check its conditions page.
  • Drive times: about 45 minutes from Hilo (30 miles on Highway 11); 2–2.5 hours from Kailua-Kona by the southern route, or 2.5–3 hours via Waimea and Hilo.
  • Staying inside: Volcano House is the only hotel inside the park. Volcano Village, just outside the entrance, has small inns and cottages.

Getting Around the Big Island

  • Two main airports: fly into Kona (KOA) for the west coast and Hilo (ITO) for the east. If the flights work, arrive at one and leave from the other.
  • From Kona airport: 15–20 minutes to Kailua-Kona, 25–40 minutes to the Waikōloa and Mauna Lani resorts, and 45 minutes to an hour to Waimea.
  • Across the island: Kona to Hilo takes about 1.75–2 hours.
  • Storm damage: in late September 2026, Hurricane Nolo dropped 8–15 inches of rain and caused flooding and closures in Kaʻū and Puna, including along Highway 11. Check road conditions before driving the southern route to the park.
  • You need a car for almost everything outside the resorts.
