Where to Stay in Poʻipū

Poʻipū, on Kauaʻi's south shore, is the island's sunniest resort area, with calm swimming beaches and mostly condo resorts. It took the worst of Hurricane Lowell's waves in September 2026, so check that your hotel and the businesses nearby are open.

The Short Answer

Stay near Poʻipū Beach Park, a popular swimming and snorkeling beach, so you can walk to the sand. Our pick is Ko'a Kea Resort, with direct access to Poʻipū Beach.

  • Kiahuna Plantation is Poʻipū's only beachfront condo resort, with full kitchens and free parking.
  • The Brennecke end, at the east end of Poʻipū Beach, has condo complexes such as Poipu Kai and Poipu Plantation, a short walk from the sand.
  • Koloa Landing, on Poʻipū Road, is a villa resort built around a big pool rather than a beach.

Poʻipū took the worst of Hurricane Lowell's storm surge in September 2026. Before you book, ask your hotel about repairs and what is open nearby.

Poʻipū After Hurricane Lowell

When Hurricane Lowell passed west of Kauaʻi in early September 2026, the National Weather Service reported that large waves and storm surge swept away cars, homes and roads in the Poʻipū area. Before you book anywhere here, ask the hotel about repairs, closed pools or restaurants, and construction noise.

The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority says most of Kauaʻi's accommodations, restaurants and activities are operating as usual. In the weeks after the storm, Poʻipū's resort association asked travelers with flexible dates to consider postponing while supplies were limited. Check openkauai.org and your hotel's notices for the latest.

Getting to Poʻipū

  • From Līhuʻe Airport (LIH): 25–35 minutes by car.
  • To the north shore: Princeville and Hanalei are well over an hour away, so a north shore day is a long one.
  • Waimea Canyon: Waimea Canyon Lookout reopened on October 24, 2026, but Kōkeʻe Road and the other lookouts were still closed in early November.
  • Getting around: you need a car; the beaches, Kōloa town and restaurants are spread along the south shore.
