Where to Stay in Kāʻanapali and Kapalua

West Maui's resorts run north from Lahaina along one coastal road: Kāʻanapali Beach first, then the condos of Honokōwai and Kahana, then Nāpili Bay and Kapalua at the northern end.

The Short Answer

Stay on Kāʻanapali Beach for a long sandy beach, a beach walk and resorts with big pools, restaurants and lūʻau. Our pick is the Hyatt Regency Maui at the south end. The Westin and Sheraton are the central alternatives, and Aston at The Whaler is a condo option right next to Whalers Village.

  • Honokōwai, just north of the resort strip, has oceanfront condo buildings with kitchens and fewer resort extras. You drive to most restaurants.
  • Nāpili is a small, calm bay with low-rise condos and Napili Kai Beach Resort, which charges no resort fee.
  • Kapalua, at the northern tip, is a quiet golf and hiking resort anchored by The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, about an hour from the airport.

Lahaina town, just south of Kāʻanapali, is still rebuilding after the August 2023 fire. The resort areas were not burned and are open.

Lahaina After the 2023 Fire

The wildfire of August 2023 destroyed most of Lahaina town, just south of Kāʻanapali. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority says major cleanup has been completed and many Lahaina businesses have reopened. Visitors are asked to follow signs, stay out of restricted areas and not photograph the fire sites.

Kāʻanapali, Honokōwai, Nāpili and Kapalua were not burned. The Kāʻanapali Beach Resort Association says Kāʻanapali was structurally unaffected by the fires, and every hotel in this guide is open. Lahaina Harbor is open again for daytime use, 6 am to 6 pm, by boat operators with state permits.

Getting to West Maui

  • From Kahului Airport (OGG): 45 minutes to an hour to Kāʻanapali and about an hour to Kapalua, on the Honoapiʻilani Highway around the West Maui Mountains and past Lahaina.
  • Getting around: the Sheraton runs a free shuttle within Kāʻanapali, but you need a car for Nāpili, Kapalua and the other beaches.
  • Fees and parking: the big Kāʻanapali resorts charge daily resort fees, parking or both. Aston at The Whaler, Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas and Napili Kai say parking is free.
  • South Maui: if you would rather be closer to the airport, see Wailea and Kīhei, 20–40 minutes from OGG.
